How to Choose the Right Size Art for Your Wall

Large 60 x 40 framed canvas hung above a sofa

The most common mistake we see is art that is simply too small for the wall. A few easy measurements will help you find a size that feels considered, balanced and intentional, whether you are dressing a console in the hallway or the long wall behind your sofa.

Start with the furniture

Artwork hung above furniture should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of the width of the piece beneath it. Measure the furniture, multiply by 0.66 and 0.75, and look for a canvas that falls between the two numbers.

  • 36 in nightstand or chair: 24 × 18
  • 48 in console: 30 × 20 or 36 × 24
  • 60 in loveseat or bed: 40 × 30
  • 72 in sofa: 48 × 32
  • 84 to 96 in sofa: 60 × 40

On a 48 inch console, a 30 × 20 feels quiet and relaxed, while a 36 × 24 fills the space with more presence. Both work. It simply depends on how much you want the art to lead the room.

How high to hang it

Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one composition. On a bare wall, center the artwork at about 57 inches from the floor, which is roughly eye level and the height most galleries use.

When in doubt, go larger

A single oversized canvas almost always looks more intentional than a small one floating on a big wall. If you are torn between two sizes, choose the larger. Over a full sofa, a 60 × 40 turns the wall into a focal point.
